Job Title: Nutrition Officer FSR #502

Location: Zaatari Camp

Job Summary
The nutrition officer will work alongside the senior nutrition officer to ensure that Nutrition Program (IYCF Program and SBCC programs) operate effectively and efficiently to deliver optimal quality care to infants and children following up within nutrition program, girls and boys under the age of 5 and pregnant & lactating women. The nutrition officer will report to the senior nutrition officer (SNO) to accomplish the following tasks: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential function with or without reasonable accommodation.
 

Main Tasks and Responsibilities:

  • Overall responsibility for the day-to-day administration of project activities and staff (IYCF activities in nutrition clinics, SBCC activities, and nutrition staff.
  • provide technical guidance on IYCF to support staff (nutrition team, healthcare team, community health team, child protection, MH and other humanitarian actors as necessary to promote consistent good practice.
  • Ensure all staff understand and implement program guidelines used for assessing the mother-child pair, advising the best feeding option and following up as appropriate.

  • support in Assessing infants for infant danger signs, growth, and feeding; especially infants nutritionally at risk, to be closely followed up and ensure timely referral at any time a sign of risk is identified.
  • Ensure appropriate and consistent education messaging to mothers and other carers at all programming contact points and in the community.
  • Ensure comprehensive health checks and treatment according to the agreed protocols.
  • To monitor infant milk formula prescription, following infant milk formula SOPs and BMS code.
  • Review the forms completed by staff to ensure completion, accuracy and coherence.
  • Facilitate the development and scheduling of outreach activities (e.g. for IYCF Outreach Workers/volunteers).
  • Facilitate cross-sectoral programming, particularly to promote excellent communication and referral between IYCF, CMAM, and SBCC programming.
  • Ensure adequate availability of all medical and food supplies for each distribution, input in to creation and maintenance of a monthly distribution plan and ensure stock is pre-positioned as planned with SNO, pharmacists and logistics team.
  • Ensure that the community nutrition volunteers provide effective follow up of all cases - particularly: ensure the prompt tracing of children who are absent from the program.
  • Ensure that specific children to be followed up as required (new born infants, infants not gaining enough weight, pre-term infants, infants with low-birth-weight, infants with identified or potential special health conditions, infants at risk of becoming malnourished, malnourished infants and young children, infant-mother with social problems etc.
  • Ensure appropriate and consistent education messaging to mothers and other carers at all programming contact points (e.g. nutrition clinics, RH clinics, pediatricians, GPs, delivery units, post-maternity ward) and in the community.
  • Conduct interviews for incentive-based volunteers (IBVs) and tackle hiring process.
  • Train IBVs on best practices for IYCF messaging and BCC messaging.
  • Conduct routine performance evaluation and build the capacity of volunteers (IBVs) to ensure consistent quality messaging and programming.
  • Contribute in monitoring of the IYCF and SBCC activities, support group sessions, counselling sessions, SBCC sessions.
  • Contribute to the development of contextually appropriate IC materials for local IYCF assessments.
  • Develop training material and Information, education, and communication (IC) materials on IYCF messages.
  • Develop existing program forms or create additional ones (e.g.. IV performance evaluation, IYCF, MUAC screening, tally sheets, distribution sheets, assessment, and counselling ... etc) as needed
  • Support nutrition trainers in identifying mothers to lead Mother Support Groups (MSGs) and support them in successful leading of groups, to promote optimal IYCF practices
  • Support in identifying BCC champions, develop their scope of work, support capacity building and support monitoring of their activities.
  • Support in identifying and reporting of success stories and beneficiaries’ stories, who were supported with the IYCF and SBCC interventions
  • Assist in procurement planning and following up procurement requisitions with the assigned procurement officer to ensure the timely and receipt of items per requirements.
  • Raise procurement requisitions (PRs) regularly & timely to ensure that program supplies are available all the time.
  • conducting community training sessions as needed.
  • Assess training needs and implement ongoing didactic and on- job training activities targeting the nutrition volunteers and nutrition counsellors' team to build their capacity and enhance program services and practices, especially newly hires.
  • Support the weekly and monthly IYCF, and BCC reporting and timely submission of compiled IYCF, and SBCC reporting.
  • Report and track progress on the follow up of infants and children with special cases, follow-up on their medical nutrition care plans.
  • Liaise with IMC logistics to ensure adequate and timely provision of standardized anthropometric tools and other nutrition equipment.
  • Liaise with Health, Protection, Mental Health, Disability Support and WASH Projects in the camp to meet potential crosscutting needs.
  • Support coordinated donor/IMC visits to integrated IYCF and BCC services in both camps.
  • Cover nutrition clinics in case of absence of nutrition staff.
  • Monthly tracking records of IYCF activities, and BCC activities.
  • Periodic relevant statistical reports and data required by nutrition officer and the senior nutrition officer (SNO).
  • Comprehensive periodic and ad hoc reports to inform the supervisors and IMC Field Manager about any security incidents or other related issues.

  • Good computing skills in Microsoft Office, including Word, Excel & PowerPoint is required.
  • Experience working in humanitarian settings.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Minimum a BSc degree in Nutrition, Dietetics, or related fields.
  • Minimum experience of two years in clinical nutrion and nutrion counselling.
  • Previous experience in IYCF programming, or MIYCN.
  • Minimum one year of experience in a similar role.
  • Proven capacity to supervise, train and coach staff.
  • Very good command of spoken and written English.
